As of June 1, 2005 the State Bar of Texas no longer required that public ads by Texas attorneys state "Not Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization" although only those who take the time and do the extra course work to get certified within a given specialty remain entitled to state their specialty publicly in association with their name. RgvLaw.Com no longer posts the disclaimer even if the print media has not caught up with the change in regulation. This website is maintained by the fees paid by those law offices who upgrade their listings or order website services, yet it shall be the policy of this company to promote all lawyers equally by presenting their contact information.
The rating guide on each page will highlight the names of attorneys with websites for the convenience of the viewer who is browsing in a hurry.
By 2008 we hope to have greatly changed the numbers, but as of January 1, 2004, our research found there were 793 attorneys in the Rio Grande Valley. Only 31 had advertised websites, only 43 had announced that they offered a free first consultation, and to our knowledge only 137 out of those 793 had publicly listed their areas of practice. Until now. RgvLaw.Com aims to change these statistics by posting a BASIC text listing and a one page website containing a picture and an interview to every law office willing to pay 10¢ or 25¢ per day, respectively, to post the information. Oftentimes, when the layman needs an attorney the only resource is the phone book or a word of mouth referral. It seems almost incredible that in this day and age, long after the horse and buggy and telegraph age, that we should still resort by default to such pre-21st century methods. Those almost outdated methods, good as they are, have undeniable limitations. The phone book is bulkier than your comfortable computer pointing device, the print is tiny, and pages are sometimes torn and missing. Plus, to place any sort of comprehensive listing in the telephone book is costly and the medium does not lend itself to but an expanded rudimentary listing. The most some can do is pay for an entire page. A website is cost effective and one has the ability to post any number of pages. The number of computer users increases daily, and many search for attorneys online. Computers are here to stay. Yet there is another important reason for maintaining a professional internet presence. The internet allows for website changes because it is dynamic, something the printed medium does not allow. The ability to rapidly post changes to information at the same location where people know they can find it is a powerful tool. Anyone who has ever had to use a phone book older than one year knows the problem of missing or outdated information. The hard copy medium, unless published daily, thus tends to actually discourage the posting of more than rudimentary information - but more information is what the potential attorney client desires. Imagine the time, resources, and money saved by all parties if the attorney's office and the potential client meet with reasonable expectations in mind. How many times has a walk-in potential client queried about specific representation in a law office that primarily handles other areas of law? Add the minutes and you will agree it would have been a lot easier to have said "please visit my RgvLaw.Com hosted website for an instantly printable map to my office" in response to an off the cuff query. No need to shoot from the hip if you can aim the potential client to your website right from your business card. How many times has a person called with the question "Does the attorney handle such and such type of litigation?" Even internet searches are sometimes not adequate, since a lot of other so called legal services directories have 75% advertising and 25% content, with the content often nothing but tiny text that looks suspiciously like a phone book. Until we came along, and to date, few people have bothered to develop this very needed database, a comprehensive law services directory devoted primarily to the attorneys and not primarily to advertising, if any. Let the day come when anyone in the Rio Grande Valley can locate the name of a local attorney in a given area of law in a matter of seconds, at any time. Attorney referral services exist, but only those who learn that there is an attorney referral service will call - and then the service zaps the attorney for at least twenty dollars! This almost discourages the idea of a free first consultation. RgvLaw.Com will never charge a referral fee, and we are not an attorney referral service. We do not specifically recommend any particular attorney to any specific person at any time because we are an online directory accessible to the general public. Our listings are subject to change without notice at any time, and our focus is on accuracy. There is no fee for viewing information at this website. We charge attorneys for website development and hosting, and those whom we host are accessible right from their listing by clicking on the WEBSITE button, which then automatically redirects you to the law firm's website page.
This online directory is free to the general public. As for being up to date: with the online directory a law office can call in a change and we can post it for the entire world in a matter of hours or minutes. Law firm business from word of mouth referrals is probably as reliable now as it has been for centuries, but it is only the word of one person, and that one person cannot even fully describe the services of an attorney that is known to the person. The only person can that can accurately and reliably describe their services is the person who provides the services. Thus the idea that you see before your eyes, this online legal services directory. Legal services are a serious matter. It is my objective to slowly but surely provide you, the online seeker seeking the services of an attorney, with a website for every attorney willing to sign up for the same. This is not a free service for the attorneys who have contracted for a website with us, but it is a free service to you. Now change comes slowly to some people, and there might be some old school lawyers who will simply prefer to not be listed, or who only accepted the BASIC text listing we initially gave to all Rio Grande Valley attorneys for FREE during the year 2004. (Take note that as of January 1st, 2005, that listing fee went to 10 cents per day, or 36.50 per year). Some attorneys may feel that they have enough business already and that their firms are as big as they want them to be, and that they have no need for an internet presence. So you will eventually not see those here. We wish them luck, but the Rio Grande Valley is going to the internet search engines for everything from medical to legal services and beyond --- in an unstoppable manner. Fortunately, many do agree, as Abraham Lincoln once said, that "we must prefer the new and untried in favor of the old and tried", and will continue to reach out to the public. We encourage all who read this to suggest to their favorite attorney that they contact us for a listing. Remember this, as you select an attorney, that "by their fruits ye shall known them". The attorneys that invest in a website are trying to reach out to you in order to better serve you, and they are thereby indicating that they are willing to work extra hard to reach out to you. It has been my personal experience that successful people are never too busy to see a potential client, and that those who are too busy to try and reach out to the humblest person in the world may never even know what has passed them by. Terms of Use & Service Agreement The basic listing is FREE to all attorneys in the Rio Grande Valley cities on our home page. A larger text listing is just 25 cents (25¢) a day, billed annually. Beyond that, what we do is register, develop, and host a website for the practice and keep it online for 75 cents (75¢) per day, billed annually. The 75 cents (75¢) per day fee or renewal fee includes the features listed below. We then add 25 cents (25¢) for one more necessary element to the task at hand, which is the promotion of the law firm website as information and not as advertising. Advertising is allowed too, and specific rules govern the dissemination of what can properly be called advertising. Our view on the matter is that statements such as "our attorneys are tigers in the courtroom" might be considered advertising whereas a statement such as "our attorneys are board certified and capable" might be more neutral information. Our approach is the latter, and we want to shy away from anything less than a proper formal approach to presenting the law firm website. Here are some of the tools we apply to do just that:

Search engine submission is helpful in achieving high ranking in the global search engines, and employs the use of keywords such as, for example, "attorney", "RGV", "family Law", etc. As another example, type into your favorite search engine (for example, yahoo.com) or even into your browser address area, the phrase "rio grande valley attorneys" or "attorneys in the rio grande valley" and chances are you will find a link to RgvLaw.Com. Now try searching for your own name if you are an attorney (use quotations marks around your name so the search engines know you are seeking the names together, for example "John Smith" or you will find every John and Smith as separate words). If you do this you may well find your existing listing on a page within RgvLaw.Com. If so this means that the whole world can find you too. Let us help to make it easier for you to be found. We cannot overstate how important it is to be as visible as possible on the internet. After all, people do not always know a business enterprise, including a professional firm, by name. It helps to know of a business concern by name, but most people use general categories when doing research via search engines. Our intent is to appeal to the the online viewer by posting current information in the global search engines. This is a specialized task, and many companies charge hundreds of dollars for this task alone. We include it as part of our service to every law practice when we design and host their website.
